Reducing Vista Rear-End Crashes

Many new vehicles today come equipped with all kinds of safety technology that did not exist just a few short decades ago. Drivers in Vista, San Diego and nationwide are safer because of things like airbags, electronic traction control systems and seat belts. Fortunately, the existing technologies are not the end of the advancements in the field of in-vehicle tech. As new safety features come out, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will evaluate whether the particular feature should be recommended or required. The NHTSA provides information to consumers about the vehicles they drive and the car’s safety performance as part of the New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).

In 2013, the NHTSA asked for public comment about what new safety features and in-vehicle technologies should be included in the updated NCAP. In response to public comments, the NHTSA has announced that two automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems will be included. These systems are designed to prevent rear-end collisions, which a personal injury lawyer knows are one of the most common types of car crashes that occur within the United States.

AUTOMATIC BRAKING TECHNOLOGIES CAN HAVE A BIG IMPACT ON REDUCING REAR-END CRASHES

Approximately a third of all motor vehicle collisions that were reported over the course of 2013 were rear-end accidents. These types of accidents can happen if drivers in the rear follow too closely behind a lead driver, if rear drivers are going too fast, or if drivers in the rear aren’t paying attention and don’t know when to hit the brakes.

The NHTSA has reported that in many of the rear-end accidents that occur, the drivers did not even hit the brake at all. In many more of the crashes, the driver did not fully hit the brakes although he may have tried to stop.

The fact that drivers did not try to avoid the collision by braking likely means that they weren’t paying attention and didn’t see the other car, or that they were too impaired or fatigued to stop the crash before it happened. The rear vehicle was also likely going faster than it would have been if the driver had tried to brake to avoid an accident, which means the collision is more likely to be a serious one.

Every driver should know not to engage in certain high-risk behavior like driving drunk or driving while fatigued, especially as there have been numerous public education campaigns related to these behaviors. Unfortunately, drivers still do these things. Eliminating human error isn’t possible, so accounting for it using systems like automatic emergency braking systems is a good choice.

These automatic emergency braking systems consist of two different technologies. Crash imminent braking stops the car when a crash is imminent. Dynamic brake support provides supplemental braking if sensors determine that driver-applied braking is not good enough to avoid a crash. Together, the systems can make a big impact on reducing the chances that a rear-end collision will occur.
