San Diego Motorists Make Roads Safer with New Year’s Resolutions

People throughout San Diego, Del Mar, Hillcrest, Vista, CA and surrounding areas are finishing their New Year’s celebrations and are looking forward to 2015. As a new year approaches, most people are considering resolutions they can make and things that they can do to improve their lives.

This year, consider making a commitment to safer driving one of your resolutions. Apersonal injury lawyer knows that driver behavior has a big impact on whether motor vehicle crashes will occur. If every driver made a resolution to change a few dangerous behaviors, millions of collisions could be prevented.

RESOLUTIONS TO IMPROVE DRIVER SAFETY

Improving driver safety does not have to involve major lifestyle changes. With a few simple resolutions, you can make a big impact on the risk of a car crash occurring. For example, this 2015, drivers should resolve to:

  • Stop being aggressive to other motorists. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a full 67 percent of drivers responding to a survey question said that they had felt threatened or frightened over the past year because of the behavior of other motorists on the road. Around a third said they had felt threatened over the course of the past month. Aggressive driving behaviors like passing improperly, cutting people off and following too closely behind a front driver can all make people feel unsafe. These behaviors also significantly increase the risk of motor vehicle crashes. Resolve not to do them any more and instead to be polite to other motorists.
  • Stop giving in to distractions. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, three types of high-risk motorists who increase distracted driving collisions include drivers whose eyes are taken off the road; drivers who take their hands away from the wheel; and drivers who do things that cause cognitive distractions. Distracted drivers cause around nine fatalities and 1,153 injuries every single day in the United States. If you vow to put away your phone and other electronic devices and stay focused, you can help to bring these numbers down.
  • Stop speeding. Speeding is a factor in around a third of car crashes in the United States according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The majority of speeding crashes happen on small local roads. In fact, while 30 percent of speeding accidents happen on highways, 38 percent occur on smaller roads. Slowing down can help you to avoid these types of collisions. It can also save you money. Fuel Economy reports that you can get a 33 percent improvement in gas mileage if you go the speed limit on highways and five percent better gas mileage if you stay within the limit while in town.

By making these resolutions, drivers could make a big impact on road safety. Forbes reports that drivers, on average, will end up involved in a car crash and making a claim with a motor vehicle insurer an average of once every 17.9 years. Changing your behavior slightly and stopping the high risk behaviors can help to reduce the chances that you will have an accident in 2015.
