San Diego Child Safety – Defective Toy Injury Prevention

Toys are a popular gift for kids in Vista, Del Mar, Hillcrest and throughout San Diego. With new toys coming into the house, however, parents need to be aware of the potential risk of products with which their children are playing. Being alert for signs of recalls and aware of dangerous toys is key to keeping children safe.

The Consumer Product Safety Commissiontakes a tough stance on toy safety, requiring that all toys undergo testing regardless of where they are made. A personal injury lawyerknows that toys cannot enter the country unless it can be demonstrated that they have undergone testing in independent laboratories to ensure they are free of hazards like lead. Still, despite the CPSC’s best efforts, there are still high-risk toys on the market and kids still get hurt or killed each year because of the items they play with.

PARENTS NEED TO BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS TOYS

Because it is their job to try to prevent toy-related deaths and injuries, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has largely tried to paint a positive picture when it comes to toy safety statistics. In the agency’s 2013 report on injuries and fatalities related to toys, the CPSC indicates that only nine deaths occurred due to problems with toys over the course of 2013. A total of 22 percent of the fatalities were caused by riding toys.

Of course, this only tells part of the story. While nine deaths is still far too many, the fact is that there were also 256,700 kids who sought treatment at emergency rooms because they got hurt when they were playing with toys. Some of these injuries were permanent or severe and may have changed the course of a child’s life forever. The CPSC has indicated that the number of injuries has largely remained steady, trying to highlight the fact that it is good news that at least there is not an increase in the number of kids getting hurt.

However, even this information may not be painting a full and complete picture for parents. The issue is that, as News 10 reports, the actual number of toy-related injuries has increased dramatically over the past decade. The increase is not reflected in the CPSC data because electronic scooters are not included. These scooters have had a huge impact in affecting the number of young people who get hurt.

In 1990, there were 18.9 toy-related injuries per 10,000 children and in 2011, there were 26.9 injuries were 10,000 children. This is a significant increase that the CPSC is not really talking about. Electronic or “kick” scooters may have been largely responsible for a 40-percent increase in injury rates that sent kids to emergency rooms.

Parents need to know that the scooters their kids may want to play with are one of the biggest drivers of toy-related injuries. However, these scooters are not the only things that could jeopardize kids health. The CPSC reports that there were 30 toy recalls in 2014, some of which occurred because of too much lead. Checking the list of recalled toys and the data on injuries can help parents to keep their kids safe from these hazardous products.
